A fine lyrical guitar solo dances with a subtle sustain, giving way to piano. Pageant like musically prior to power chords as female backing vocals building the piece. ‘ A Man For All Seasons’ finds us stoically in historical form. In recent years the Downes Braide Association has been producing music like this under a progressive pop guise. Slower, more eerie, like one of those old public health TV adverts that used to warn about the dangers of waters, it also invokes music hall variety aspects and an understated guitar solo symphonic in structure. ‘ Life In Dark Water’ is a different proposition. Musically, I’m in mind of Caravan with Camel’s Andy Latimer guesting on the guitar solo, albeit it’s Stewart frequent collaborator of the time Peter White. A tale of a lady who’s left and bid a presumed friend goodbye, while in my mind’s eye I’m picturing that John Cusack/Kate Beckinsale film Serendipity. While ‘Time Passages’ spoke of Christmas, this time the opening piano line evokes the sound of falling snow, but it’s soon into a soft bouncy rock and roller in ‘Valentino Way’. The song remains one step from melancholy, memory lane traversed in a Spanish guitar solo, a jazzier one blown on sax, then sweeping up in more profoundly with a fuller orchestrated sound, varying in arrangement and at over six minutes long not outstaying its welcome as thematic overture to the record as a whole. Better to take the rough with the smooth, sit back, chill with a glass of wine and soak in an album stirred with genuine emotion.Įlectric piano guides into the title track, a soft rhythmic hook and the lines “It was late in December, the sky turned to snow,” draw the listener in swiftly, a saxophone weeps round the edges of the song warmly, and but a bar or two later when he sings “Well I’m not the kind to live in the past,” has us playing the Doubting Thomas, we’ll accept we can learn from our mistakes and wonder what ones are concerning the singer right now. That his songs often touch on personal feelings as well as delicate and otherwise interactions with others is a damn sight deeper to my mind than the mindfulness attributions of today’s various media celebrities that cause me to raise an eyebrow in disbelief at what I perceive for the most part to be ingenuity. For the most part, it is still quite relevant. It’s of its time in much of its scope, production sound (by Alan Parsons) and ambition. The music at its mildest a kind of soft rock by way of John Lennon, where more fluid and atmospheric in its arrangements bridging the Canterbury side of progressive rock with the more wistful contemplations of say Leo Sayer. Often, he weaves facts and impressions of times gone by with the more personal aspects of his own life, as quiet and thoughtfully introspective as they might be. Stewart’s penchant for historic narrative is given full measure across the length and breadth of the main album. It opens up in wide gatefold manner, bearing not only the original album’s cover artworks, but the aforementioned booklet featuring photos and interview on the one outer packet sleeve and a facsimile of a promotional poster of the time on the other.ĬD 1 features a remastered version of Time Passages, CD2 single versions, demos and tracks from a live radio show in Chicago. There’s a 3CD/DVD Deluxe Edition Box set available, but the 2CD version I have for review is more than adequate for those of us less familiar with Stewart’s work. Still active to this day, long-term fans obviously faithful but for such collections as this to come along assumes a growing interest from new listeners for his back catalogue. Did fashion demand punk give way to new wave so quickly and we forget all that had gone before? Not in the USA it seems, where Al Stewart continued to have a series of hit singles for a while. That Time Passages, first released in 1978, was a platinum album, proves quite shocker. A different story from the mythos the likes of the late John Martyn would have us know. While born up north, when a child his widowed mother moved to Dorset, and one gathers he was later privately educated. The extensive booklet that comes with this collection explains that and many other matters concerning the man’s career. Should you not have been a fan, aside from the evergreen ‘Year of the Cat single’, what might you know of the troubadour Al Stewart ? That he made his bones, at the now famous Les Cousins Folk Club back itself in the sixties? That he was born in Glasgow, Scotland? That last one always threw me with his precise diction being so English in its mannerisms. Microphone CapsulesThe Free Space Pro II uses matched DPA 4060 hi-sensitivity capsules. The effect is so powerful because the Free Space Pro II design is based on 13+ years of research into binaural technology and human hearing. When you listen back over headphones or 3D capable speakers, you hear the sound as if you were there at the time of recording. Why does it sound so natural? The Free Space Pro II captures sound just like we hear it in the real world with our own ears. The exchangeable battery is used to power the microphone capsules. The base of the microphone has a 1/4"-20 female thread mounting hole that can be connected to a hot-shoe adapter or used to mount directly onto a tripod or grip handle.īatteryThe Free Space Pro II contains a 9V alkaline battery within the chassis. The microphone stand adapter is removable. MountingThe Free Space Pro II comes standard with a 5/8" microphone stand adapter installed in the base. The phantom power works regardless of the state of the 9V battery. The Free Space Pro II also includes an 1/8" stereo jack output that is powered by the internal 9V battery. Power the Free Space Pro II using the 48V supply from a pre-amp, digital recorder or mixing console. XLR Phantom Power OutputThis upgraded version of the Free Space includes two balanced stereo XLR outputs that support phantom power. The quiet 'openness' of the mic is great for field recording as well. This sensitivity, coupled with the wide dynamic range of the microphone capsules, makes the Free Space Pro II ideally suited for professional studio recording and high-end recording binaural capture. The extremely low noise floor of the DPA 4060 capsules results in a very open and dynamic binaural realism, especially during very delicate recordings. The Free Space Pro II delivers a very sensitive and natural binaural recording. The 3Dio Free Space Pro II comes with two matched, integrated DPA 4060 capsules mounted at the opening of the ear canal. I've included a couple of accessories I tended to use with the mic which includes an adjustable 1/4" threaded mini tripod stand, a rycote shockmount and the 3DIO windscreens. It comes packed with 2 x omni-directional DPA4060's in each of the ear cavities. Used it for building my location sample library and I've found myself using the library instead of capturing new recordings which tells me I've captured the majority of what I need now. Nothing about the music stood out to me, but I did mute it since I played it mostly at work in 10-15 minute bursts. Lives seem to respawn every 15 minutes, so, if you don’t mind waiting an hour an a half, you can do so, or just buy more using real money. You can play a level over, however, up to three times and get more coins, but the difficulty goes up each time by quite a bit, and you only get three lives. Each level gives you 10 coins while the cheapest upgrade is well over 200. Predictably, you’re given the first couple free, then have to buy more with actual currency. Having worked as a sysadmin for PIM/workflow/groupware tools for the best part of two decades (yes, I'm a yellow-bleeding Lotus Notes guy) the biggest single challenge for that sector has been a lack of interoperability between calendar apps. Maybe that's why the set of apps hasn't attracted as much attention, with standalone email apps being now more common. With the phrase personal information manager though, I almost think social networks to a degree filled this space. Or, in another direction, perhaps a mix of 1Password and the Apple Health app would be closer to a personal information manager, as those two keep much of the most sensitive personal data we record on our devices. And if that was deeply tied to a notes app, with backlinks like Roam Research, you could have a detailed view of all the personal information that goes through your apps and services every day. Imagine a list of contacts ordered by how recently you'd communicated, showing all emails and chat messages across all platforms with that person, along perhaps with co-scheduled events and video calls. I could almost imagine a different take on the PIM app that's more contact centric. I tend to prefer " best of breed" individual products rather than all-in-one apps, and so my default take is that email should stand alone-perhaps with tight integration with a CRM for contacts, a Notes app for reference, a Calendar for events, and so on. Everyone seems to be trying to find a solution that integrates everything. These days our communication streams are more than just email though. I don't mind migrating content out of email to my notes or calendar, but can see the benefit of having email integrated too. There are plenty of alternatives out there these days that do this. Desktop Outlook is too messy and overloaded for my needs, so I use Ferdi (open-source version of Franz) to combine everything into one interface. I use Outlook on iPad and Android phone since the different accounts all get integrated into one app. I currently have several emails for different parts of my life and they are all on different platforms (microsoft, gmail, etc). Plus, they both broke on my too many times when something important needed to happen. I've tried things like Notion and Zenkit but they felt too much like databases and had too much overwhelm for buttons and knobs and settings. Then I would have everything in one place. Still wish I could squish calendar and integrated tasks into Obsidian. Was using Todoist with Google Calendar integration and may switch back to that. I'm a teacher and find that recurring tasks with some variations (like canceled classes) are too much for TickTick. Currently using TickTick since it has the integration, but it is quirky and has issues. There are apps that are good at one or the other, but rarely both. Amazing how hard that is to find these days. So much easier to see everything in one place. I think tasks/to-dos should be integrated with a calendar since both are usually time-based. I've figured out workflows for a lot of my needs. Interlinked Markdown for as much of everything as I can because it is the most flexible and not tied to a specific proprietary app. I know, probably a pipe dream.Ĭurrently loving Obsidian for my notes and clipped content and everything else. I still have hope that it is possible and that the solution will be easy to use and implement and available across platforms. I've tried so many apps and tools over the years and have never found something that works for everything. Friction between the blades needs to be as low as possible, which is attained by choice of material and finish, and frequent lubrication. The clipper is moved so that hair is positioned between the teeth of the comb, and cut with a scissor action when one blade slides sideways relative to the other. Hair clippers are made up of a pair of sharpened comb-like blades in close contact, one above the other, and the sides which slide sideways relative to each other, a mechanism which may be manual or electrical to make the blades oscillate from side to side, and a handle. Similar but heavier-duty implements are used to shear sheep, but are called handpieces or machine shears.
